“Sir, then they’re just going to have to die.”
After the two hijacked planes hit the World Trade Center and the report that Flight 93 was hijacked and hurtling towards Washington DC, CIA director George Tenet ordered the evacuation of the agency’s headquarters. The CIA building in Langley was a prime target for Al-Qaeda.
Cofer Black, Tenet’s deputy in charge of counterterrorism, insisted that his staff remain at their computers:
TENET: Well, we have to get those people out.
BLACK: No, sir, we’re going to have to leave them there because they have a key function to play in a crisis like this. This is exactly why we have the Global Response Center.
TENET: Well, they could die.
BLACK: Sir, then they’re just going to have to die.
